Background

Picture, if you will, a traditional English village full of old world charm with its historic church, a pub with an open log fire, thatched cottages, a traditional tennis club with a wooden clubhouse and a village green with a duck pond. But for piffling details - like the absence of a church, pub and cottages - Caversham Park would be that rural idyll!

From 1969 until 1976, club members used local school and public courts. Sharp increases in hire charges inspired a small group of dedicated club members to search for a piece of land on which to build some courts. Two years of letters, phone calls and meetings finally persuaded the local council to lease out some land at Clayfield Copse, bordering Caversham Park Village in Reading. Planning permission for four outdoor macadam tennis courts was duly obtained and, in 1979, the courts were built (along with a clubhouse).

Tennis clubhouse, economy style!

We are now a small but thriving local community tennis club, providing competitive, participative and social opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels. Our teams have enjoyed tremendous success in the last few years, but our main emphasis is on creating and maintaining an enjoyable sporting environment for a wide diversity of tennis enthusiasts. We always welcome enquiries from anyone interested in joining, no matter what standard! CPTC is not a profit-making organisation. All subscriptions are used for the running and maintenance of the club.

Juniors

Our philosophy is to provide affordable opportunities to as many children in the community as possible.

We recognise that our juniors are the future of the club and introduce as many as possible to senior tennis as soon as they are competent and mature enough to cope. When young players reach the age of 18 and go on to further education at university or college, they continue to pay subscriptions at the junior rate until they complete their course.

Supervised junior club play takes place on Saturday mornings.

Seniors

Club sessions take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights, Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings. All sessions are popular and well attended (you can always be sure of a game!).

A peg system operates during these sessions. Doubles has priority over singles and short sets are played (tiebreaker at 5-5), so everyone gets plenty of variety during the session. There are also opportunities for competitive singles play for those who wish to improve their rating.

Teams compete in the KIA National Club League and the Berkshire League.

New members are always most welcome. Membership of the Club also entitles you to take part in a draw for Wimbledon tickets.
