Picture, if you will, a traditional English village full of old world charm with its historic church, a pub with an open log fire, thatched cottages, a traditional tennis club with a wooden clubhouse and a village green with a duck pond. But for piffling details - like the absence of a church, pub and cottages - Caversham Park would be that rural idyll! From 1969 until 1976, club members used local school and public courts. Sharp increases in hire charges inspired a small group of dedicated club members to search for a piece of land on which to build some courts. Two years of letters, phone calls and meetings finally persuaded the local council to lease out some land at Clayfield Copse, bordering Caversham Park Village in Reading. Planning permission for four outdoor macadam tennis courts was duly obtained and, in 1979, the courts were built (along with a clubhouse). The club now boasts six floodlit courts and a comprehensive coaching programme managed by Gary Drake Tennis (GDT). We are essentially a small but thriving local community tennis club, providing competitive, participative and social opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels. Our teams have enjoyed tremendous success in the last few years, but our main emphasis is on creating and maintaining an enjoyable sporting environment for a wide diversity of tennis enthusiasts. We always welcome enquiries from anyone interested in joining, no matter what standard! CPTC is not a profit-making organisation. All subscriptions are used for the running and maintenance of the club. ![]() |

If there is a vacant court during any session, it may be used by either seniors (during a junior session) or juniors (during a senior session) for as long as that court is not required. If a league match is in progress, players must ensure that this is not disrupted in any way, i.e. by keeping the noise level down, etc. Use of the courts at unscheduled times is on a first-come-first-served basis. Members may play singles (not just doubles) even if there are others waiting, but the following courtesy must be observed: if members are waiting, play must be restricted to the completion of a short set (tie-break at five-all), and if members are practising (i.e. not playing a set), they should restrict their court time to one hour only. A member may play with a guest (only one guest per member at a time) on payment of a fee fixed by the committee. It is the member's responsibility to pay the fee direct to a committee member. No guest may play on more than three occasions in a year. Keys for the gate may be purchased from the Membership Secretary. Keys for the clubhouse are issued at the discretion of the committee. Recognised tennis shoes must be worn. Players must not play without a shirt. Bicycles, pushchairs, dogs, skateboards, roller blades, etc are not allowed on court. The last member to leave the club must ensure that clubhouse lights and appliances are switched off and that the clubhouse and gate are locked. Subscriptions must be paid in accordance with the Club Constitution. Details for the current year are posted in the clubhouse. ![]() |

Club sessions take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights, Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings. A peg system operates during these sessions. Doubles has priority over singles and short sets are played (tiebreaker at 5-5). When you arrive at the court, locate your peg and place it in the "queue" (the waiting area of the peg board). If there are no other pegs in the queue, place yours to the left hand side of the top row. If there are others, place yours to the right of the queue. When a court becomes free, the person whose peg is at the front of the queue selects the next four to play. This selection should be made from the first six pegs in the queue. The four pegs thus selected should be transferred from the queue to the "on court" area of the peg board. When a set is finished the winners' pegs should be placed ahead of the losers' pegs in the queue. ![]() |

Players should observe the following "unspoken" rules when playing club sessions: Talk quietly when you're near a court and play is in progress. Wait until a point is over before crossing behind a court. If you've got more than 4 balls on your court, return the extra ones to a neighbouring court. Roll them to the back of their court (but not when a point is still in progress). Return balls to the server as quickly as possible between points (taking care not to hit anyone!). Always ensure 4 balls are returned to the clubhouse after your set. Be responsible for calls on your side of the net. Make sure your opponents hear the call. If the ball is good, say nothing and play on. Always give your opponents the benefit of any doubt. If you're not sure if your opponent's shot is in or out, it's in! Always respect your opponent's calls. Call and agree the game score at the start of each point and the set score at the start of each game. If the score reaches 5-5, a tie-break should be played. Do not throw your racket or shout abuse. ![]() |

Heard on court at Cav Park . . .Trevor G: "I've never lost a tie-break at this club ... on a Sunday ... in April."Wyn M: "I definitely had it ... till I missed it." Harriet J: "I don't do backhands!"
