Club rules

If there is a vacant court during any session, it may be used by either seniors (during a junior session) or juniors (during a senior session) for as long as that court is not required. If a league match is in progress, players must ensure that this is not disrupted in any way, i.e. by keeping the noise level down, etc.

Use of the courts at unscheduled times is on a first-come-first-served basis. Members may play singles (not just doubles) even if there are others waiting, but the following courtesy must be observed: if members are waiting, play must be restricted to the completion of a short set (tie-break at five-all), and if members are practising (i.e. not playing a set), they should restrict their court time to one hour only.

A member may play with a guest (only one guest per member at a time) on payment of a fee fixed by the committee. It is the member's responsibility to pay the fee direct to a committee member. No guest may play on more than three occasions in a year.

Keys for the gate may be purchased from the Membership Secretary. Keys for the clubhouse are issued at the discretion of the committee.

Recognised tennis shoes must be worn. Players must not play without a shirt. Bicycles, pushchairs, dogs, skateboards, roller blades, etc are not allowed on court. The last member to leave the club must ensure that clubhouse lights and appliances are switched off and that the clubhouse and gate are locked.

Subscriptions must be paid in accordance with the Club Constitution. Details for the current year are posted in the clubhouse.

Club sessions - court etiquette

Players should observe the following "unspoken" rules when playing senior club sessions:

Talk quietly when you're near a court and play is in progress. Wait until a point is over before crossing behind a court.

If you've got more than 4 balls on your court, return the extra ones to a neighbouring court. Roll them to the back of their court (but not when a point is still in progress). Return balls to the server as quickly as possible between points (taking care not to hit anyone!). Always ensure 4 balls are returned to the clubhouse after your set.

Be responsible for calls on your side of the net. Make sure your opponents hear the call. If the ball is good, say nothing and play on. Always give your opponents the benefit of any doubt. If you're not sure if your opponent's shot is in or out, it's in! Always respect your opponent's calls.

Call and agree the game score at the start of each point and the set score at the start of each game.

If the score reaches 5-5, a tie-break should be played.

Do not throw your racket or shout abuse.

Peg system

When you arrive at the court, locate your peg and place it in the "queue" (the waiting area of the peg board). If there are no other pegs in the queue, place yours to the left hand side of the top row. If there are others, place yours to the right of the queue.

When a court becomes free, the person whose peg is at the front of the queue selects the next four to play. This selection should be made from the first six pegs in the queue. The four pegs thus selected should be transferred from the queue to the "on court" area of the peg board.

When a set is finished the winners' pegs should be placed ahead of the losers' pegs in the queue.

Maintenance

Are you a club member with some spare time? Perhaps you would like to help us preserve the life of the courts by assisting with maintenance. The official advice about maintaining our macadam courts is as follows. Always keep the courts clean and free of dirt, dust, leaves and vegetation. In winter, the court should be washed once a week. Do not use hard brooms or squeegees as this only damages the surface and condemns the upper layers to a shorter life.
Sweep or blow clean (weekly)
Rinse (weekly)
Trim Grass (as needed)
Remove leaves/needles (autumn)
Repair cracks (autumn)
Repair cracks/remove stains (spring)
Wash winter debris (spring)

We also need volunteers to assist with trimming trees and bushes alongside the courts and repairing damage to perimeter fencing.

Quotes

Heard on court at Cav Park . . .

Trevor G: "I've never lost a tie-break at this club ... on a Sunday ... in April."

Wyn M: "I definitely had it ... till I missed it."

Harriet J: "I don't do backhands!"

David B: [spinning for serve] "M or W?"
Brian R: "W"
David B: "No, sorry, it's P. We'll serve."

Henry B: "They can't pick these shots. My eyes look one way, my racket goes another and the ball goes a third way!"

Dave W: "She'll be a big server. She's very tall for her height!"

Allan T: "Hold on while I put on my hat."
Trevor G: "Is there a woodpecker flying about?"

Allan T: "I've got the best eyesight in this club."
Trevor G: "Is that why you're sponsored by Specsavers?"

Ellie F: "Can we have pavlova at the end of season party?"
Zan B: "Pavlova?"
Dave W: "She won Wimbledon in 1973"

Dave W: "My main strings are Kevlar"
Zan B: "They're made from fishes' eggs?"

Allan T: "Do you know your laces are undone?"
Trevor G: "No, but if you sing the words, I'll hum the tune."

Excuses, excuses, excuses! . . .

Wyn M: "Och, no! I thought I had the ball, then the trees started moving!"

Celine C: "It's not my fault. I had a problem with my socks."

Celine C: "I couldn't see it. Everything went green and blue!"

Bianca W: "How did you lose to Ollie?"
Sam H: "My hat broke."

Bianca W: "Could we replay the point. I thought I saw a flamingo."

Bianca W: "I looked behind and I looked in front and I missed it."
